ABOUT US

Surreal Graphics is a small design firm based in Sudbury, Ontario — and when I say small, I mean small! One designer, and a host of helpers, all making sure that every client gets preferential treatment. Clients never have their needs fall by the wayside, or find themselves bulldozed by the brand wishes of larger companies. Here at Surreal Graphics, you’re the boss. Of course, you’ll have some help!

Sherri Lavigne: President/Senior designer/Business advisor

Once upon a time, before the world gave us the Internet, I began my education with the two-year graphic design program at George Brown College and followed it with a third-year certificate program that introduced me to Macintosh II. At that time, everything was still done by hand, and though I allow no mention how long ago it was, I think it gives me a perspective on design and technology that not many current designers can claim. (Of course, I am guilty of initially dismissing the potential of the Internet, a fact my oldest son reminds me of consistently!)

I began my career at a sign shop in Tillsonburg, Ontario, but it was Northern Ontario that offered more — though to be honest, there were bets taken on just how long I’d last. I’m not one for cold, and I admit, there were thoughts of bolting for the south, if only I could find the highway! (I found it later, it was under the snow!) Now 25 years later, I still call Sudbury home.

My career flourished at The Sudbury Star. I was offered the chance to work in the editorial department on infographics, page layouts and illustrations to go with reported stories. I agonized over editorial cartoons that a supportive managing editor encouraged me to do, and created many I am proud to have my name on. I expanded my work to the advertising department and began designing ads and putting together special features. I won several awards, not just for my work with The Sudbury Star, but with another newspaper, as well.

Unfortunately, the newspaper industry is constantly changing, and so did my work within it. When I was laid off in 2013, I hoped that my years of experience would open doors for me wherever I went. Yeah … nope. The doors all read: “Sorry, you’re over-qualified for this position.”

Since then, I have consulted with people and businesses regarding design work. From logo design, to book cover designs and page layout — even maps — as well as my continuing partnership with The Sudbury Star. Surreal Graphics gives me the chance to help my clients create exactly what they are looking for. I can even help you with your website, regardless of my initial Internet ideas! (One of the only poke-the-bear points my son gets to make!)

And though the majority of the work is handled by yours truly, I have a team that helps me get the best for my clients. (Some are paid only in cheesecake, to keep my client’s costs down – I make great cheesecake!)

Wizards of words/Magic makers

The professional writers
I have a pool of writers who can write stories from mining to business profiles to tourism. They ask questions; research; then use the right words to tell client’s story.
My senior writer, Jenny, is a story-teller at heart and always produces work that exceeds client expectations. It is truly a gift. (And I’m pretty sure she is a wizard and her keyboard is the wand!
